Capturing beautiful beginnings in studio or outdoors in Cornwall

Your life is about to change, and this is one of the wildest journeys your body will take. Pause with a maternity photoshoot, before the start of the next chapter.

Maternity photos capture the shape of your body and the essence of who you are, as you grow into motherhood. It also documents the time you and your baby shared a body - how amazing is that!

The purpose of a maternity photoshoot is not perfect bumps or poses. It’s to help you cherish this moment in time and how you felt, simply and honestly.

Based in Grampound near Truro, visit my home studio for an intimate indoor session, or meet me out in nature or at your place.

Maternity photography - my approach & style

Natural moments

I am a natural light maternity photographer, with 12+ years experience working with women (most who are camera shy). I am regularly told that I put people at ease and sessions are enjoyed a lot more than expected. It’s really important to me that you feel comfortable and confident in me.

Maternity sessions can be in my home studio, or nearby outdoor location, and can also come to you at home.

Simply Styled maternity photography

I will guide you through each step - understanding what clothing works, andgiving direction during the shoot. There is no pressure to look or dress a certain way. These photos are for you. Bare bump is always an option, and I keep a collection of dresses and simple coverups for you to use too.

Get in touch

If you’re interested in a session, or just want to find out more, I’d love to hear from you.

Timing your maternity photoshoot

How many weeks pregnant should you be?

The sweet spot for maternity sessions is between 30 - 35 weeks, when your belly’s pregnant shape is pronounced but you’re still comfortable moving around. If it needs to be earlier or later, that’s fine - I can work with you at any stage of your pregnancy.

When to book your maternity session

Advance booking is highly recommended as availability is limited, especially for sessions outside of normal working hours.

Struggling with your body image in pregnancy?

A maternity photoshoot should be empowering

If you’re not feeling very beautiful, know that you are not alone - and this doesn’t mean that you can’t have beautiful pictures. My job is to understand what positions and angles work for each person, what clothing works best and how light sculpts to flatter - I will make sure we capture your pregnancy in a way that you will cherish and look back on proudly.

It’s not easy to see your body change, even though the reason for it is so wonderful - mixed feelings are normal. A maternity photoshoot should be about documenting the time your body grew a baby, and I believe that looking back you will be more amazed.

Bare bump or covered up?

You do not have to wear anything you’re not comfortable in, or bare your bump. These are your photos, and you decide.

There is no right or wrong, but I will guide you through what works and what doesn’t when choosing outfits - and I have something in the studio for everyone if you don’t have anything to wear.

Nerves are normal, but they quickly fade, replaced by the makings of new memories.

What happens during a maternity session: step by step

Preparing for your session

I want you to feel confident before your maternity photoshoot, knowing you’re in safe hands. Before your shoot we may meet in person (full maternity experience), or I’ll send a written maternity session prep & style guide (mini sessions) to get the most from your time with me.

Arriving

If we’re meeting somewhere, we’ll be in touch with the exact location beforehand and I’ll see you there. Usually it’s in the location car park, and we can make our way together. If you’re coming to my studio, you can park right outside the front door - it’s easy and you’ll have the address.

Outfit changes

I recommend arriving wearing something that feels very ‘you’ and comfortable, that I can photograph you in but you’re welcome to change on arrival too. I’ve got a steamer for any creases.

Bring along your changes of outfits, accessories etc, depending on our session plan.

Posing guidance

Nerves are normal and I will tell you exactly what to do down to the last detail. Posing is kept natural but most people like to have direction. There’s plenty of time to ease into things and things soon start to flow naturally.

Throughout the session I will give all the prompts needed - I don’t expect you to know what to do and know it’s not comfortable for most people in front of the camera.

How long does a maternity photoshoot take?

A Mini Maternity Session takes about 30 minutes, and a Full Maternity Experience lasts around 1 hour.

That said, I don’t clock watch and give sessions the time they need to unfold without feeling hurried.

What to wear - Maternity styling in depth

Simplicity is key

Have a few options, such as a maxi dress, a form-fitting outfit, something with an open front for bare bump photos (always optional).

Client wardrobe

I have a few simple pieces available to borrow for mums in the studio.

Partners & children

Stick to plain, neutral clothing that compliment earth tones (tan, beige, charcoal, sage green, etc) - nothing with logos or text, or too many fussy details.

Hair & Make up

Hair and make up can be kept natural and how you usually would wear it. Nails neat and neutral.

Maternity Photoshoots in Cornwall - FAQ’s

When is the best time to schedule my maternity session for?

I like the 30 - 35 week window, while you’re still able to move comfortably but bump is pronounced enough. Everyone is different though this is a rough guideline. Book well in advance to guarantee availability.

Can my partner be in the photos?

Yes, partners are welcome in Mini and Full Maternity Experience packages (I love capturing the connection, especially if you’re returning for a newborn session). If including children, I recommend the Full Maternity Experience - it’s a great way to break the ice before your newborn session too if you’re coming back for one with me.

Do you do maternity & newborn packages?

Yes - I love capturing the full story for families! I usually go on to photograph newborns for parents after their maternity session, unless they’re from out-of-county. With the Full Maternity Experience, your newborn photoshoot booking fee is included.

I’m not sure I want to show my bump - do I have to?

No, not everyone wants to have bare bump photos and that’s fine. These are your photos, I’m here to help you capture pregnancy in whatever way you’d like. Full styling advice is given before the session and I don’t expect everyone to go nude or semi-nude.

What editing do you do on maternity photos? Do you keep stretch marks etc?

All photos are hand edited in my signature style, keeping tones and features natural. Things like temporary marks on skin may be lightly retouched if necessary but things like stretch marks are a beautiful and natural record of what your body has lived, and I generally keep them in to celebrate this journey if they are noticeable in an image.

About me

Although I’ve always had a love for art and photography, it’s only since having my first baby in 2013 that a deep passion for capturing similar memories for others took hold. My obsession has become my livelihood and I continue to grown and evolve with every session.

Over the years I’ve photographed hundreds of mums with babies on the way as well as with their newborns, babies & families. I am mostly self-taught, with training on safety, approach and posing acquired from various top photographers in the field through online courses. I’ve learnt so many valuable lessons on the job - always striving for better, progressing, tweaking and over time developing my own style of seeing and shooting.

I hope I never tire of contributing my particular verse to the stories of my clients in this way. It’s a joy and an honour to capture such important and precious memories for people.

I’m a mum to two boys, and with each passing year my experience and understanding of what these moments mean will over time grows deeper. It’s less and less about getting the perfect pose, and more about capturing how the moments feel - that is what you will want to hold onto when they’re not little any more.
