It’s often the simplest things you’ll miss the most. How your newborn baby fit in your arms, their perfect tiny fingers and toes, the weight of their little body on your chest, and the endless micro facial expressions you could stare at for hours.

“I honestly dont know how to thank you enough. I had a good cry in the car, you really have captured such beautiful memories for us to treasure. Your talent is incredible and it was so lovely working with such a lovely lady.”

Newborn photography sessions: in-studio or at-home

a Natural light studio in grampound

My studio is a small, simple space in my home, kept warm enough for a lightly dressed or undressed baby, with a comfy sofa for parents and tea and coffee on hand. It's the kind of place where you can feed your baby, have a cup of tea, and let the session find its own rhythm.

You'll find me in Grampound, between Truro and St Austell, with parking directly outside and no steps to navigate.

We do have a resident cat who occasionally wanders in to say hello. She's friendly, but can easily be kept away if you'd prefer.

At-Home newborn sessions

For families who want to be photographed where life is actually happening. Your home, your everyday - the Moses basket by the window, the morning light in the bedroom, the older sibling peering over the edge of the cot.

It has a different feel to the studio - more documentary, more lived-in. I come into your space and hold space within it. Nothing needs to be tidied, styled, or made ready.

I work with whatever natural light and space you have, and we'll talk through what works best during our planning consultation.

How I keep your newborn safe

Of course your main concern is the safety and well-being of your newborn baby. For me it’s imperative that baby’s comfort and safety always come first - photography goals should never compromise a baby’s comfort, safety or well-being.

I am skilled in natural and safe newborn positioning, with over 12 years experience working with babies under 2 weeks old. I handle babies confidently so they always feel secure and in safe hands - this helps them to remain settled and contented.

I know that each baby is different. There is time taken to get to know their little personalities, so every session unfolds naturally as I learn what works and what doesn't for your baby.

Basic safety rules:

  • Babies are never left unattended

  • No unsafe surfaces are ever used that they could roll off

  • Positions are mindful of airways and circulation

  • Swaddling is firm to keep baby feeling safe and secure, but never too tight

  • Room temperature is controlled and I know the signs for a baby too hot or cold

  • If a baby is uncomfortable in any position we won’t keep them there

Above all, sessions are meant to be enjoyed - we are here to relish this amazing time, not to force anything. Know that if you’re not comfortable with something, we’ll adjust or move on.

We had a newborn shoot when our daughter was three weeks old. Michelle was amazing and handled her with so much care when moving her into positions to be photographed and swaddled. The room was also nice and warm. And we LOVE the photos 😊

The Curious Creatures Photography approach to newborn babies

Being is enough.

My job as a newborn photographer is to capture authentic, storytelling images of this tender and precious time.

Newborn sessions are a space for real moments and emotions. Crying babies, grumpy toddlers, exhausted and frazzled parents - it’s all welcome. If your baby is going through a cluster feeding stage, or has reflux or fussy with colic, there is plenty of time to stop as often as needed. It is surprising how many family and parent shots are taken while babies are being settled.

My priority is that you feel comfortable, and able to relax and enjoy some moments soaking up your new baby. I love to keep everything simple - the set up, colours and posing are all minimal and timeless.

I love to work with neutral and earth tones, and tend to have a simple, light and airy yet intimate style.

photographing Newborns with toddlers and older children

I have many families returning with their second or third baby, and am very used to including older children and toddlers in newborn photoshoots.

Older siblings are always welcome and I know how important those shots of them together are to you. While I can’t make anyone do anything they don’t want to, I have a few tricks up my sleeve to encourage cooperation and this is covered in detail during your pre-session consultation and in my written prep guides.

My approach with little ones is generally to try and make it fun for them, with invitations to take part rather than coercion so that it’s an enjoyable experience for them too.

Our advice if you’re deciding on a photographer... LOOK NO FURTHER! Michelle is a truly special photographer who is able to adapt her craft to get excellent photos no matter the subject. We had a maternity shoot followed by a newborn shoot and both sets of photos are an extremely special snapshot in time that will be treasured forever. You won’t regret it.

When to book newborn photography

Book before baby arrives

Book well in advance as plenty of time is needed to plan your session, and this is best done while you are still pregnant, to avoid disappointment.

We will meet for your pre-session consultation, and I’ll give you information to consider before the session.

The newborn photoshoot itself is pencilled in for around ten days after your due date, and adjusted once baby arrives - giving you flexibility while ensuring availability within the first week or two.

ideal age of baby for newborn photography

Newborn babies are ideally between 6-10 days old to capture the fleeting newborn features which change so fast. This is when they are sleepiest, and naturally curled up from their position in the womb.

That said, I photograph newborns up to 6 weeks old - they’ll have changed a lot and may not sleep much but it’s still the early days.

If your baby is older than six weeks, you’re still very welcome to come in. It’s the same approach - to capture what is, simply and honestly, but your newborn photos will look different to those you see here.

What to expect on the day

Timing

Newborn sessions happen in the late morning, usually on weekdays. It’s a great time for natural light, and gives you time to get out of the house. It’s also when babies are naturally more settled. Of course if you have a toddler as well, we’ll time it around naps and meal times etc but it’s best to keep the day clear for this so that everyone is fresh and has plenty of time.

finding the studio

I’m on a quiet street with parking directly outside the front door. There are no steps to navigate, it’s a small house so just bring what you need.

Outfits & styling

Everything for your baby is provided. I have a collection of specially handmade clothing, blankets and wraps for newborns, and most pictures are of baby undressed and simply swaddled.

Outfits for you and the rest of the family should be simple and made to look as if you belong together, and will be discussed during your planning consultation.

During the session

Babies and children rarely behave how you think they will, and it’s best to come with an open mind and to go with the flow. I keep things simple, adjusting according to moods and temperaments on the day. Sometimes there’s a lot to work with, sometimes little - just know that no matter what, there are always beautiful things happening and my job is noticing them.

My invitation is to savour as many moments with your newborn, partner, and older children as you possibly can - this is a chance to enjoy what you’ve got.

Session length

Newborn sessions typically last around 2 hours. Some sessions move quickly, others take more time - there’s no time table.

The session flow

All photoshoots with me have a go-with-the-flow approach. Normally I start photographing the baby straight away if still asleep from the car, so parents are asked to dress them simply and neutrally. I gradually remove layers as I go, wrapping and adjusting positions until they need to stop for a feed. This may feel like a natural time to switch to family and parent photos, and the session flows from there.

At-home sessions

If your session takes place in your own home, the flow is very similar. I work with natural light and simple spaces. You don’t need a perfectly styled home - real life is more than enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Worried about whether your toddler will cope with a new addition, let alone a newborn session, or how your body will feel after giving birth and how you’ll face being in front of a camera? You’ll find answers to these and other frequently asked questions below.

What if my baby cries or won't settle?

Completely expected, and always fine. There's plenty of time built into every session for feeds, cuddles, and settling whenever your baby needs it. Nothing is ever forced, and we always follow your baby's lead, letting the session find its own rhythm around them.

What if my toddler won't cooperate?

Honestly, that's not unusual, especially with a brand new sibling in the mix. I keep sibling moments relaxed and pressure-free, letting children come to things in their own time. Even a brief, fleeting moment of connection is often enough, and those are sometimes the most real ones. No forced poses, no expectations.

What if I don't feel like myself after birth or a C-section?

You don't need to feel ready or look a certain way. These images tell your story as much as your baby's, and I'm always mindful of photographing you in a way that feels true and kind. There's no pressure to perform, you just need to show up. Being is always enough.

Can siblings be included?

Absolutely, older siblings are always welcome. I include sibling moments in a relaxed, age-appropriate way, creating space for natural interaction rather than anything stiff or posed. I have a few gentle ways of encouraging even the most reluctant participants, and we cover this in detail during your pre-session consultation.

What will my newborn wear?

Very little, most of the time, and that's intentional. Most newborn images are of baby simply swaddled or wrapped, which keeps things timeless and puts the focus on their features rather than clothing. I have a collection of specially handmade wraps, blankets, and delicate outfits available to use, so you don't need to bring anything for your baby.

What should parents wear?

Neutral or muted tones tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs - on how it felt, rather than clothing. You'll receive a simple style guide before your session with some easy guidance, and we can always talk it through during your planning consultation.

What should we bring to the session?

Very little. Just your baby, extra nappies, milk if you're bottle-feeding, and anything that helps you feel comfortable. Everything for your baby - wraps, blankets, outfits - is provided. Travel light.

Do you do posed or natural newborn photography?

Neither exclusively, and the two aren't as separate as they might seem. I work with simple, safe positions that allow your baby to settle naturally, rather than elaborate or prop-heavy poses. The focus is always on what's real - the way your baby tends to lie, those womb-like positions they still love, and the moments between you. Everything is kept minimal, timeless, and led by your baby on the day.

What's the difference between studio and at-home newborn sessions?

The studio is a small, warm, controlled space - ideal for those classic, simple newborn images with a clean, neutral feel. At-home sessions have a more documentary quality, capturing life with your new baby where it's actually happening - your home, your light, your everyday. Both approaches go with the flow and follow your baby's lead. The right choice usually comes down to what feels most comfortable for you, and we can talk it through before you book.

Where are you based and do you travel?

My studio is in Grampound, between Truro and St Austell in Cornwall. I also offer at-home newborn sessions and travel across Cornwall to come to you. A small travel charge applies for locations further afield — we can discuss this when you get in touch.

What if my baby is already a few weeks old?

The ideal window for newborn photography is between six and ten days old, when babies are naturally sleepier and still curled from the womb. That said, I photograph newborns up to six weeks old - they'll have changed and may not sleep as deeply, but it's still early, still precious, and the approach is exactly the same. If your baby is older than six weeks, get in touch anyway - I'm always happy to talk through what's possible.

How long does a newborn session last?

Most sessions last around two hours, but there's no timetable. Some move quickly, others take a little longer. We go with the flow, and there's always enough time for everything that matters.

When will we see our images?

Your images are carefully edited and presented at your ordering appointment, usually around two to three weeks after your session. This is where you'll choose what you'd like to take home - prints, wall art, albums, or a combination - and I'll guide you through everything.

When should we book?

During pregnancy, ideally in your second or third trimester. This gives me time to reserve space around your due date and offer flexibility once your baby arrives. The session itself is pencilled in for around ten days after your due date and adjusted once your baby is here.

How much does newborn photography cost in Cornwall?

The session fee is from £65, which secures your date and includes your pre-session consultation, preparation guides, access to props and outfits, your photography session, and a private viewing and ordering appointment. Images and artwork are chosen separately afterwards - most families invest between £600 and £900 on a combination of prints, wall art, and digital images. Full pricing details are sent once you get in touch, and there's never any pressure to decide anything until after you've seen your images.

How to find me

What parents are saying about their newborn photoshoots in Cornwall…

We had a newborn shoot with Michelle and found the whole experience very relaxed and professional. My 10 day old arrived unsettled and demanding to be fed, which didn’t phase Michelle at all - I had plenty of unrushed time to feed my daughter while she amused my son! She managed to get some great family shots as well as the newborn images, despite my 4 year old (and my husband!) being less than keen on having their photo taken usually.

The finished photos were amazing (I was meant to select a small digital bundle but ended up getting the package with them all included as I was unable to choose!) I would definitely recommend!
— Kylie Weir
Aw we absolutely love them. Thank you ever so much for being so patient on the day and taking the time to get the perfect shots. It was so appreciated.
