I recently photographed a baby sitter session at one of my current favourite outdoor locations, Tresillian (just outside Truro city). Sitter photo sessions, in case you didn't know, are for babies aged around 7 - 10 months, when they can sit unaided but aren't yet walking. They are super fun to do - there's a lot of versatility in 'poses' at this age, and the reason I absolutely love sitter sessions is that I can control the composition, or what's in the shot. The beauty of babies this age is that they are upright and independent but aren't running all over the place, so I can place them exactly where I want them and 95% of the time that is where they will stay. The artist (control freak) in me is very happy with this! I can pop them in the best light with the background I like, and compose the photo how I want to. This, together with the cuteness factor, makes the most gorgeous images possible.
Doing these sessions outdoors is fantastic for the variety of backdrops available - the possibilities are limitless and it's so awesome playing with the light and different scenes. This shoot for Maia took place on an overcast Tuesday afternoon. As long as it's not raining, I don't mind if it's sunny or cloudy. We were lucky enough to time it perfectly for the peak of the autumn. The leaves had changed and were still fresh on the ground - not yet turned to dark mush. It had been dry for the few days prior to the shoot too so fortunately the ground was fairly dry.
It's a wonderful stage in babyhood to document. As soon as your little one can walk you'll realise how suddenly babyhood is over. Whether in the studio or at a local outdoor location, photographs at this age are not to be missed!
